Using archaeology, cultural anthropology, and ethno-historic documents, Dr. Duncan Earle explains the lasting meanings in the esoteric practices of Maya shamans and how they illuminate the past and the future.  Dr. Earle has a doctorate in cultural anthropology and has spent a large portion of his academic life in research on the Maya of Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico, and has written many articles and a book on the region's native peoples.  He is a consummate scholar of all things Maya and teaches about Mayas as well as sustainable "green" business at Marymount California University, where he is a full professor.

Robin Aube is the Manager of Advancement at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles.  She grew up in San Pedro but has been a Palos Verdes resident for 25 years.  As a member of the innovative ocean and marine science campus, Robin manages community outreach, educational programming and the UrgentSea annual campaign along with donor relations.  AltaSea is a public-private venture redeveloping 35 acres of dockland at the Port of Los Angeles.  We are building a world-class campus focused on ocean sustainability, with a program model designed to generate ocean-based solutions to global sustainability issues through collaboration among businesses, researchers, explorers, conservationists and educators. We have already attracted leaders in sustainable aquaculture, undersea robotics, ocean exploration and marine science and strive to generate solutions to the most critical global sustainability issues today: food, energy, and climate security.

Steve Chesser, USN (ret.) will join us with a presentation about the Marine Exchange of Southern California.  Steve's talk will include the history of the Marine Exchange, the Maritime Information Service, and the Vessel Traffic Service function, thereby outlining how it has been "Providing Maritime Peace of Mind Since 1923."  Steve is a retired USN officer, with service that included 2.5 years aboard the battleship USS New Jersey.  He recently retired from the Marine Exchange after 8 years, and continues to work part-time.
